Potential

Another Oscar nominated movie, another quote that really made me think.

In the satirical film, American Fiction, the character Sintara says to the struggling author Monk:

“Potential is what people see when what’s sitting in front of them isn’t good enough.”

Oof! Her statement was intended to encourage Monk to make the work he’s known for versus pandering to publishers.

I’ve always thought of potential as a good attribute. In this case, tho, it’s the thing that’s holding Monk back.

So the next time you assess someone’s potential, remember that it might not align with their aspirations. Focus on accomplishments.
